Challenge 6: UFOs - Unidentified Flying Objects

----------------

The universe, and even our galaxy, contains so many stars that most would agree that the probability of other technologically capable civilizations existing is very high. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they could or would come to Earth, and even if they did that we would be able to see them or communicate with them.

Much debate surrounding the existence, or otherwise, of UFOs as spacecraft carrying extraterrestials to Earth hinges on a range of implicit assumptions which often go unquestioned.

Hypothesis 1: UFOs are spacecraft carrying extraterrestials.

Some assumptions:

  • ETs can and would travel to Earth.
  • UFOs are the ETs spacecraft.
  • ETs would not make themselves known to the general public in an obvious way.

Hypothesis 2: UFOs are unidentified natural or man-made events or objects.

Some assumptions:

  • Any ETs existing could not or would not come to Earth.
  • All evidence of UFOs is publically available.
  • There is no reason why governments/military would want to keep ET contact secret.
  • Most UFOs have been identified as natural or man-made events or objects.
  • If there were ETs in UFOs they would have made themselves known to everyone in an obvious way.
  • Apparent evidence such as photographs, sightings, direct communication, etc are deliberate hoaxes, misperceptions or misinterpretations.
  • Investigations that support apparent evidence are carried out by unqualified gullible people.

What do you think?
