Teacher Story...

Have you ever wondered what makes a conversation really great?

Teacher, Peter Wright, shares with us a model for dialogical inquiry which he uses with his students to make every conversation a great one.

One aspect of Holistic Education is to create learning environments where students become inquirers and explorers rather than just passively receiving facts. There is an emphasis on being and becoming .... whether it is being a scientist, being an artist, or, in the case of the Philosophy for Children (P4C) Program, being a philosopher.
The young students in the P4C program help each other tease out ideas which have perplexed philosophers for thousands of years. On their collective journey, they use reasoning, intuition and a heartfelt intrigue born out of deep soul engagement. As they become philosophers they become far more.

In order to create such possibilities for students, the teaching pedagogy is underpinned by a 'community of inquiry' approach. So what does a 'community of inquiry' look like or feel like in practice? How is it established? The following article describes a P4C classroom experience and includes interviews with the students and the teacher. This 'community of inquiry' approach could be used in most subjects and tips are included for any teacher who is inspired to try.
