9 Ways to Become Active
Join a progressive non-government association like Landcare, Wildcare, Friends of the Earth or Amnesty International. They are agents for change.
Look to your community! |
It's your neighbourhood, your home. If you don't want a new road, or another shopping centre built, join or form a local community group. Empowered neighbours, acting together, can be incredibly powerful against government and business.
Challenge your politicians! |
If you don't like the candidates, or the parties that currently represent you, run for office. If you don't like their policies let them know. Did you know that one letter can represent 100 votes to a politician?
Talk!
Make sure your friends, family and local community know the facts you've uncovered.
Go shopping!
Look beyond the label. Asking questions about how and where things are made is very effective. Alternative trade organisations can help you find out the facts. |
Invest
Big companies have to answer to their share or stockholders. Invest in the ones that worry you and use that power to demand answers. Make sure that your bank, superannuation or insurance company is also asking tough questions on your behalf. |
Get on the Internet!
A lot of alternative and campaign groups have their own sites. You'll find them full of information and advice on the most effective actions you can take to support them. |
Read magazines!
The media filters the news, feeding us a diet of stories they think are important. Making the effort to read any one of the growing number of alternative magazines, such as the Big Issue in Australia, will give you an alternative viewpoint. |
Volunteer!
