Draft Values Matrix for Holistic Education v1.1
Holistic educators value the whole person, connectedness and caring (love). They value diversity within unity, being and becoming, and social justice. Other core or universal human values form part of a matrix of values that include tensions and dilemmas that need to be resolved, balanced or integrated as they present themselves. These may include for example:
Knowledge, imagination and insight
which includes purposeful play, intuition, wisdom
Freedom, discernment and responsibility
which includes choice, individual and collective responsibility, sustainability, stewardship
Inquiry, meaning and purpose
which includes questioning, dialogue, curiosity, passion, vocation, self-motivation
Achievement, celebration and growth
which includes personal success, individual excellence, rites of passage, journey, recognition, pride, satisfaction, well-being, fulfillment, becoming
Connectedness, relationships and love
which includes friendship, care, compassion, cooperation, acceptance, belonging, sharing, collaboration, interdependence, interrelationship, peace
Learning, knowing and being
which includes active engagement, multiple ways of knowing and being, contemplation, peace, self-knowledge, mindfulness
Diversity, unity and wholeness
which includes multidimensionality, whole-systems, uniqueness
Discipline, balance and integration
which includes depth and rigour, analysis, multi-disciplinarity, trans-disciplinarity, authentication
Flexibility, innovation and creativity
which includes valuing original ideas, being enterprising, aesthetic appreciation, co-creation, collective intelligence
Community, equity and social justice
which includes tolerance, respecting difference, encouraging distinctiveness, inclusiveness, service, being ethical
Identity, authenticity and integrity
which includes self-confidence, self-respect, perseverance, well-being, honesty
Sensitivity, feeling, empathy/perception
Humour, play, joy
