     Holistic Education In Canada

Holistic  and Aesthetic Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) University of Toronto

Holistic education is rooted in holism, or the concept of an interconnected reality. Holistic instructional strategies include visualization, cooperative learning, creative problem solving strategies and drama. However, holistic education avoids emphasis on one particular technique but instead stresses a multi-level approach to education that acknowledges interdependence and connectedness.

ASCD Holistic Learning and Spirituality in Education Network

This network attempts to foster communication and networking among educators interested in Holistic Learning. The network publishes a newsletter The Holistic Educator twice a year for its members. The network also conducts sessions at the ASCD annual conference. Some sessions explore ideas and themes related to Holistic Learning and other sessions allow for interaction and discussion amongst its members as well as others interested in Holistic Learning.

The Transformative Learning Centre at OISE

The main objectives of the Transformative Learning Centre are as follows:

• To provide an inter-departmental structure for community-university partnerships in research and field development.
• To provide a means for faculty and students to participate in specific networks requiring membership from a community-university base rather than formal academic structures.
• To support inter-departmental graduate instruction in the areas of Transformative Learning Studies and Environmental Adult Education.
• To provide a Departmental focus for international activities, the 'community and global transformation' specialization and for International Resource Collection.

The International Institute for Global Education at OISE was established to contribute to the growth of global education in Canada and internationally through teaching programs, consultancy, curriculum development and research. The Institute promotes dialogue between global educators worldwide and welcomes visiting scholars.

Global education is an holistic paradigm of education predicated upon the interconnectedness of communities, lands and peoples, the interrelatedness of all social, cultural and natural phenomena, the interlocking nature of past, present and future and the complementary nature of the cognitive, affective, physical and spiritual dimensions of the human being.
