Characteristics of Service Learning

Service-learning is active participation in thoughtfully organized service "It is not enough to be busy; so are the ants.  The question is: What are we busy about?"

--Henry David Thoreau

Service-learning is conducted in, and meets the needs of, the community. "I find life an exciting business and most exciting when it is lived for others..."

--Helen Keller

Service-learning is integrated into, and enhances, the academic curriculum. "[An individual's] mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions."

--Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

Service-learning includes structured time for reflection. "Study without reflection is a waste of time; reflection without study is dangerous."

--Confucius

Service-learning helps foster civic responsibility "Never doubt that a small group of dedicate citizens can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."

--Margaret Mead

Service-learning promotes critical thinking.

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

--Mahatma Gandhi
