Three Wishes

What do students value?

Below is a summary of what students wrote after the following guided visualisation ... each dot point refers to one student's response, and responses from the same student are in the same relative position in each section.

You are walking along a beach. Feel the sun, the wind, the waves, the sand etc. As you are walking you notice a shiny object. You pick it up and discover it is a lamp. You rub it and a genie appears and asks you to make three wishes. What are your three wishes?

You continue to walk along the beach and you pick up a perfume bottle. It says on the label that if you open it and take a sniff you can be whatever you want to be. What do you want to become?

You continue walking and come to a cliff. You clamber up the rocks and notice some caves. Inside a cave is a wise old man. He says you can ask him three questions. What are your questions?

In return for asking the questions the wise old man says you have to answer his questions. He asks "Who are you?" and "What interests and excites you?"

A revolution against the Industrial System. A higher state of consciousness. World peace.
Fame - just enough. Healthy lifestyle. A packet of Tim Tams that never run out.
Ability to fly. Zero population growth. Immortality.
Skeleton keys to get into vending machines and phone boxes. Pair of wings.
To be an all powerful genie. Everyone in the world to be peaceful. Everyone to live in harmony with each other.
To have same powers as Superman. A world free of crime and pollution. As many wishes as I desire.
To have everything I want when I want it. To have peace all over the world. For everyone to be healthy.
An everlasting supply of wishes. Everlasting life, with an ability to change my form. That my new powers do not corrupt my being and soul.
To never die. To fly. To be a baby again.

Three questions ...

Why is there anything? What is the purpose of life? What happens after life?
Will humans survive the next millennium? Is there a God? Are there other life-forms?
Is there a God? Will the Earth be destroyed? - when? Are there alien beings?
What was the attraction of flares? How can you make the most addictive legal substance in the world? How does Ray keep his hair on?
Is there life on other planets? Who is the creator of the world? Where do we go when we die?
Is there a heaven and hell? How was the universe created? Are there any life-forms on other planets?
Am I going to be happy? Is there going to be another war that will ruin the world? Will I have a family?
Is there life after death? Where do all the old socks go? Are there any other intelligent life-forms in the universe, and how can we reach them?
How can I be rich? When does the world end? Is there another me?
Who is going to win the AFL grand final? What are the numbers on tattslotto? Where is my other shoe?
Will I ever have kids? When will the end of the earth be? How will I die?
What is the meaning of human existence? How will I be living in 20 years time? How do we solve all the worlds problems?
